World Cup Qualifiers: Osimhen Breaks 20 Year Record
Last night, Victor Osimhen was the hero as the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a crucial 2-0 win over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash against Rwanda in Kigali.
The Napoli striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray, scored a first-half brace to break a 20- year goal jinx.
Before the duel, the three-time African champions were yet to record a goal on Rwanda soil after a June 5, 2005 World Cup qualifier tie that ended 1-1, courtesy of Obafemi Martins’ 78th minutes equalizer which erased Jimmy Gatete 53rd minutes strike.
Eric Chelle’s boys, entered the encounter with immense pressure, having picked up only three points from their opening four matches. But the Super Eagles delivered a composed first-half performance to silence the home crowd at the Amahoro (Peace) Stadium.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 25th minute. A well-delivered freekick from Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman found him unmarked at the far post, and the forward made no mistake, tapping home to hand Nigeria a deserved lead.
