FG completes 14 water supply projects to produce 126.28M litres daily
The Federal Government has revealed that it has completed and handed over 14 water supply projects with the capacity to produce 126.28 million litres of water daily in 10 states.
This was obtained in the latest report on the status of water supply projects’ completion from 2015 till date, which was obtained from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources on Friday.
According to the report, the states are Bayelsa, Edo, Katsina, Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Bauchi, Kaduna, Delta and Imo.
It said two of the projects were located in Bayelsa, namely the Central Ogbia Regional Water Supply Project, Otuoke, with a capacity of 3.6 million litres/day; and the 1.2 million litres/day capacity Keremor Water Supply Project.
Two of the facilities were also located in Edo State, namely the Northern Ishan Regional Water Supply Project with a capacity of nine million litres/day, and the Ojirami Dam Water Supply Scheme, 3.84 million litres/day.
The report said the two water supply projects had been completed and handed over to the Katsina State government, namely the 12.85 million litres/day Sabke, Dutsi and Mashi Water Supply Project; and the 75 million litres/day Zobe Water Supply Project Phases I and II.
It said 450,000 litres/day Vom Water Supply Project and the Mangu Regional Water Supply Scheme with a capacity to provide 10 million litres of water daily were completed in Plateau State.
The report said the Federal Government completed and handed over a 2.4 million litres/day water supply project to Benue State at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
The Gambaki/Chinade/Hardawa/Bulkachuwa Water Supply Project with a capacity of 1.03 million litres/day was handed over to Bauchi State.
Delta and Imo also got one water supply project each during the review period, as the 500,000 litres/day Otor-Iyede facility and 700,000 litres/day Inyishi Regional Water Project were handed over to them respectively.
According to the ministry, water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socioeconomic growth, energy and food production, healthy ecosystems and human survival.
It said, “It is also at the heart of adaptation to climate change, serving as the crucial link between society and the environment.
“As global population grows, there is an increasing need to balance all the competing commercial demands on water resources so that communities have enough for their needs.”
