Nigeria to host the second edition of Africa Military Games in 2024

The historic occasion of the inauguration of the local organizing committee for the second edition of the Africa Military Games, to be held in Abuja, Nigeria, next year (2024), was held at the main conference room of the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

In his welcome remarks at the occasion, the Director of Sports/Physical Training at the Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshall Kabiru Aliyu, said the essence of the sports fiesta is to foster friendship among the African military. The last was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002, when Nigeria got hosting rights. Therefore, it is important to plan for the event. About 30 countries will participate.

Similarly, in his remarks, the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), and Vice President of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), Major General Abdullahi Maikano, stated that the essence of the inauguration is to have a road map that will lead to the successful hosting of the event, adding that Nigeria is willing and ready. Nigeria will improve on what Kenya did by fielding more sportsmen and women and, most importantly, having a successful event.

In his remarks, while inaugurating the committee, the Chief of Defence Training and Operations, Major General SE Oduonwa, said it was a great honour for Nigeria to host the sports fiesta. Therefore all hands must be on deck to ensure a successful hosting because it is not just for the Armed Forces of Nigeria but for the whole country.

He further stated that sports are known for enhancing social interaction and friendship, and he enjoined the committee to take advantage of that to enhance the performance of the Nigerian military. He stated that the task before the committee is enormous. He urged them to be thorough and diligent in their assigned duties and assured the Chief of Defence Staff’s support to ensure the success of the military sports fiesta.

At the occasion were, among others, Brigadier General OA Fawole and Brigadier General TI Gusau, the Director of Defence Information.
