Lagos Commences Removal Of Illegal Shanties Along Gbagada-Bariga Drainage
The Lagos State Government has begun demolishing all identified shanties and unauthorized constructions along the Gbagada-Bariga drainage channels.
This action came after a 48-hour notice issued on Monday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State, directing owners of unauthorized structures along water channels in the area to vacate.
The measure has become necessary following discovery by the state agents of encroachment by squatters on the drainage setbacks and have since become a major source of flooding within the axis.
Last Wednesday, the Gbagada area saw severe flooding after a10-hour downpour, leading to considerable hardships for motorists and residents alike.
Wahab revealed this on Wednesday via his official X account.
The statement reads, “Following the expiration of a removal notice to owners of shanties beside Bariga-Gbagada Drainage Channel, operatives of the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance department from Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources commenced the removal of all the shanties on the drainage setback to stem the incident of flooding.”
Wahab attributed the menace by the squatters as major factor to the perennial flooding in the area.
