Protest In Unical Over 100% Increase In Fees, Levies
Students of the University of Calabar (Unical), yesterday, held a peaceful protest against the upward review of school charges announced by the management of the university.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Effiong Eyo, made available to journalists in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, confirmed that the university had announced a “slight adjustment” in the fees for undergraduates of the institution, which turned out to be 100 per cent increment.
The statement added that the adjustment in the charges was the outcome of an emergency meeting of the Senate of the University held on Friday, December 3, 2023.
A summary of the adjusted school fees of the university showed that non science new students would pay N111, 000; returning students will pay N91,500, while final year students would pay N114,000.
On the other hand, new students in the sciences are expected to pay N118,000, while returning students will pay N99,000 and final year students are to pay N121,500.
In the medical, law and engineering faculties, new students will pay N155,000, while returning students will pay N125,500 and final year students are expected to pay N148,000.
Prior to the increment, tuition fees for an average student, depending on the department, were N64, 050 for freshers, N52, 050 for final-year students, and N49,500 for returning students.
The management noted that the increment was necessitated by the current economic realities and the need to maintain the academic standard the university is known for.
