Clean City Initiative, AIESEC, takes SDGs Awareness To UNIBEN
University of Benin students and staff were recently thrilled as foremost social enterprise, Clean City Initiative, in partnership with AIESEC in Benin, organised a Sustainable Development Goal campaign walk on the campus.
The walk was to sensitise the University of Benin students on the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 SDGs include No poverty, Zero hunger, Good health and well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Reducing Inequality, Climate Action e.t.c
Over 300 students, staff and notable individuals in the social impact space went around the campus with face painting, music and games, advocating for the SDGs.
It also involved dance displays and gyration by other student bodies as they went through various faculties and ended at the Student’s Halls of Residence.
The participants took trash bags and sanitation items to help clean up the school premises during the walk.
At the event, a representative from the Edo State SDG Focal Office, Mr. Patrick Inyerhovwome, addressed the importance of the awareness walk and thanked AIESEC in Benin for organising the event.
The Founder of Clean City Initiative, Mr. Maliq Obaseki, was also on ground and talked about the importance of recycling and its environmental impact. He also introduced his recycling company, responsible for converting plastic waste to reusable products.
Mr. Maliq advised students to go into recycling, stating that an average student will make money from recycling plastic waste products.
The event engaged the University of Benin student community by bringing together different student bodies such as the Junior chambers international (JCI), the Rotaracts, the Red Cross Society Students Finance Club, Young African Leaders Initiative and others.
Speaking at the end of the event, the Branch Director of Operations, AIESEC in Benin, Mr. Andrew Kintum, described the event as a huge success.
He expressed appreciation to the Clean City Initiative and its founder, Mr. Maliq Obaseki, and attributed the event’s success to their support.
He lauded the dedication of Clean City Initiative to eradicating the menace of plastic waste pollution and reducing the chances of severe flooding in Nigeria.
According to Mr. Kintum, the SDG Walk is part of a series of events held in the University of Benin and its environs.
He stated that the other events involved arming youths in underserved communities with skills, donating relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons Camp, and a forum on the “Future of Work” theme.
“The Future of Work Forum had industry leaders such as the Co-Founder of Piggyvest, Mr Joshua Chibueze, the Head of Youth Engagement & Learning in Jobberman, Mrs Precious Ajoonu, here in UNIBEN to talk to Students and give key advice on jobs and career opportunities.” He disclosed.
He assured that AIESEC in Benin is committed to enlightening and educating youths in Edo state while reassuring that this SDG campaign won’t be the last in the University of Benin.
AIESEC is an international youth-run, non-governmental organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural internships, and global volunteer exchange experiences.
